Ted Grant was trained in a variety of sports from childhood but specialized in boxing. Instead of pursuing a career in boxing when he graduated, Ted went to college and studied medicine but also decided to take part in the college boxing team. Halfway through college, Ted's father died and left his son with a huge financial debt which forced him to leave college and look for work. Unable to find work, Ted wandered the streets and one night found two muggers assaulting boxing legend "Socker" Smith. Ted helped Smith overcome the attackers and Smith offered to take Ted under his wing to help him train as a boxer. In the following months, Ted became the undefeated heavy weight boxing champion.

Unwittingly, Ted killed his mentor "Socker" Smith in a fixed boxing bout. His managers Flint and Skinner placed a needle in Ted's boxing glove that was laced with a powerful sedative which killed "Socker" Smith. Ted Grant was then arrested but Flint and Skinner feared that Ted knew too much and arranged an accident. As Ted was being taken to the local police station, the car veered off an embankment, killing both police officers and presumably Ted. Ted Grant survived the tragic accident and became a fugitive from justice. Wandering the streets, Ted came across a child who had been robbed of a comic book that featured Green Lantern. Grant listened to the child describing the famous mystery-man Green Lantern which inspired Ted to create a costume of a large black cat. Ted took on the name of Wildcat and vowed to clear his name. Wildcat finally brought Flint and Skinner to justice continued his fight as a mystery-man.

It was just discovered recently that Wildcat has nine lives which helps explain why he is so youthful and active for a man of at least 80 years old. Wildcat is a prominant member of the new JSA.
